Inspirational Yorkshire is an independent think tank belonging to grassroots Yorkshire.
We are proud of Yorkshire, of our heritage, our environment, and our creativity. We want to build an even better future for our children, grandchildren, and upcoming generations but are being held back from doing so.
Currently in the UK, central government exercises a considerable amount of control over local government bodies. It provides finance for many local authority activities and seeks to micro-manage them to the extent that local minor decisions are now effectively being made by central government.
This undermines local democracy because our local elected representatives have responsibilities, but little financial or supervisory control over what is done. This mismatch between the authority and control wielded by central government and the responsibility it insists lies with local representatives does little for the effectiveness of governance. The system is failing. Change is needed.
It is worth remembering this quote by Albert Einstein: The significant challenges we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them. In other words, it is time to think anew, outside the box.
Much of our own inspiration has come from the following three principles set out by the Independent Constitutionalists UK, and we thank them for their support:
- a new kind of democracy combining effective citizen participation with genuine representation.
- an inclusive economy that addresses inequality and conserves planetary resources.
- a codified constitution that sets out in plain language the rules by which we govern ourselves.
We want a Yorkshire that inspires its residents to have fresh ideas, to be creative and encouraged to lead meaningful, dignified, and aspirational lifestyles.
We need a new kind of economy. One that encourages innovation and redirects wealth back into the community and puts control in the hands of the people.
Our aim is for a semi - autonmous Yorkshire with its own parliament, executive, municipal arrangements, system of taxation, police, and courts .
Welcome on board our Time Machine as we travel forward to the latter part of this century to witness the impact made to three typical Yorkshire households.
